This is still a fairly free and open society. **, the illegals march and protest and they're not even supposed to be here
So true.
That's very true, but let's say you are marching behind the anarchist group who decide to do really bad violent stuff and you get arrested along with them in teh confusion. That's teh kind of risk I was thinking of.

Well, if you can't spot the anarchists then maybe you ought not to be out there protesting...

Yes...but the illegals are Bush's pets. He has done more to promote and protect illegal immigration than a President should. It is very obvious where he stands. No wonder they could be so open.

On the other hand...Iraq is Bush's pet project. He has done more to promote the Iraq fiasco than anyone. With that in mind...I wouldn't want to be a foreign protester arrested if the protest gets out of hand. You never know what it would lead to. I wouldn't take that chance.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Well, we ended up going and we're glad we did. There was no violence, although we heard later on the news that some folks had been stopped from "storming" the front door of the Capitol Building...

It was really heart-warming to see how many "folks next door" were there... more than I remember being at previous anti-war protests. The anti-Bush sentiment was palpable. I've read a few articles quoting people about why they went and several went for the same reason I did: to support Congress as they challenge Bush with, so far, their "non-binding resolutions". Hoping for something binding, although from this morning's news, it looks like Bush is gearing up to attack Iran. Good grief.

He's a madman. :o

Thanks to all who weighed in, and I'll let you know if we have any problems lifting conditions or naturalizing because of our attendance at the rally & march.

Best wishes,

Maya

Edited to add: Worst case scenario is we DO have a problem and have to move to my husband's country... would we want to live here anyway if we can't speak our minds and dissent? I think not.

Yeah right.

Anyway, Rey has said he'd like to work on some capaigns for the 2008 elections, but I'd say it's not a good idea to go to a protest because of the arrest risk. There are other ways to participate in politics without running the risk of arrest.

How can you be in the Twin Cities in 08 and not protest? I'm already planning my protest signs for Labor Day weekend.

I would march for something I believed in. But don't cut your own throat (while in the immigration process). Don't get on any mailing lists or run for president of the peace movement etc.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

anti-war protests, how 60's

For my husband who comes from a country where 99.9999% of protests end in the police beating the sh*t out of the protestors, participating in an anti war rally here is something he cherishes. Thank God for the freedoms this country offers us

hahaha yeah we probably won't live here at that point but I want to come back just to protest. Let's hope Rey will already have his GC by the convention convocation!
