Nationwide, the poor have lower participation rates in elections and this appears to be the case in Ferguson as well. While the city has about 15,000 residents 18 or older, only about 1,350 votes were cast in last April's mayoral election, in which Mayor James Knowles III ran unopposed. Furthermore, in the last city council election held in 2013 there were about 1,500 votes cast. In 2011, one city councilman won his seat with a grand total of 72 votes.

The poorer you are, the less likely you are to participate in elections at all. How does that fit your theory that Democrats want more and more government dependents?

We're talking about national policy concerning poverty and you cite a mayoral election in some town that has 15,000 people. Well done.

It is something that has been happening in the UK for as long as I can remember.

It is akin to bombing large areas of the Middle East for no obvious benefit, a sign of affluence. Plenty of other Empires have gone that route, ended in tears, as it eventually must.

Just a question of when. Not sure it is possible to reverse, can think of no good examples.

Sorry, from my time here, only minorities are referred to as being on govt asst.

As I've pointed out about 100 times here, half of my extended family is on some kind of govt. hand out that they're taking advantage of IMO. They're all white. That's why this subject is hits home with me. I was on welfare for a short time as a child. However, it never became a way of life like some others.

Context would do here. My point is that neither side has done a good job eliminating poverty. I don't know why it seems like Obama is worse than the rest when we were in a recession when he was elected. But you talk about deniers, on your side, you blame every ill on Obama. Doesn't that go against the whole bootstrap theory you preach about?

I'm part of that membership too. I remember how embarrassed I was when my mother had to start using them and I couldn't eat my favorite foods anymore because we couldn't afford it when my dad left.

That's why it pisses me off when the comments here are getting nails done and several baby daddies and rims on cars.

Your head is in the sand. To deny that government benefits generate votes from "beneficiaries" (too many of which are freeloaders) is unbelievable. Just because most of them might not vote does NOT mean that the Dems don't dole out welfare to attract votes. Certainly no person bites the hand that feeds them.

You are wrong. Many people do vote Republican who are in receipt of benefits. However, if the aim of government welfare is to create voters, it couldn't be doing a worse job, now could it?

Govt handouts come in a lot of flavors

Farm subsides, Federal Flood insurance for seaside mansions.. etc
