is he really a first sergeant? he had his hands in his pockets!

What kind of interviews do you go on to pursue your dream of becoming a doctor?

If this guy even had a bachelors degree wouldn't they make him an officer?

LOL, no. Many enlisted folks have degrees but prefer not to go officer.

Didn't miss it at all. I've moved from coach to 1st before when a seat was available.

What benefits? I've flown in and out of uniform and never saw a difference.

Depending on the airline, you can get bumped up to first class if you're in uniform travelling on orders. Also, UA gives their Economy plus upgrade if you're just a service member.

There's a difference between being upgraded and changing seats between cabins after the doors close. The former happens all the time, the latter not so much. Try to take an economy plus seat if you haven't paid for it or have been upgraded to it prior to boarding. Not gonna happen. I've had three economy plus seats to myself recently with most of the others vacant around me while folks in the back of the cabin were squeezed in like sardines. If airlines were to give those away for free just because they're available, fewer passengers would pay for them.

I used to get upgraded all the time on UA when I was flying from Japan to here for conferences. Almost all of the officers in my office became frequent flyers with United for that reason alone. It used to be about 150$ if you were to pay for it out of pocket. About 6 months afterwards, if you had orders and an ID card, it was free.

Please quote the FAA reg that precludes a passenger changing seats across cabins

I was on a Delta flight from Hartford to Minneapolis on Monday. During the drinks service, the guy to my left asked the flight attendant if there was any weather affecting Minneapolis, since he had a tight connection (as did we, for that matter). She said no, but there was an empty seat in economy plus if he wished to move. No complaints from me when he did, because he was a smidge chunkstyle. I guess the difference was that he didn't ask for it mid-air, but rather had it granted to him.

That was very nice of her. Delta is most strict about passengers moving to economy plus, but sometimes the best thing to do is to bend the rules a little bit. So, you're back in the land of sunshine and clean air?

FAA reg? Who's talking about FAA regs? Certainly not me.

John R- Contrary to popular and unadvised belief, it is against federal regulations to change seats across cabins once on board, so the notion that someone in first class should have changed seats with him, however well intended, would have been a breach in security.
