My daughter lives close to the U.S./Canada border. Yesterday afternoon her boyfriend drove her across the Peace Bridge at Buffalo and no hassles. She did not have a passport, only showed her driver's licence and birth certificate. Ok the customs officer said the picture on her D.L. didn't look like her and asked why her hair was dark (in person) compared to the picture. She told him she dyed her hair. Anyhow never checked her boarding pass or anything else and sent her on her way. She flew out of Buffalo airport. She realizes she will have to get a passport before next January however.

Yes, she doesn't require a passport for land crossings into the US, just if she crossed into the US by air from outside of the US. The land phase of the process is supposed to be in place as early as next January or as late as June 2009. About the driver's licence photo . . . I always thought that if it did look like you or made you look good that you had to have it redone! VBG

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

There have been huge lineups in Canada due to the new US passport requirements for entry. As our wedding is in April, I've been a bit concerned about those guests who are still awaiting their passport. Noting that you don't need a passport to to enter by land, may be the only way that some of our guests may be able to get to the wedding should they not have their passports in time! Thanks for the idea!
