Yet the vast majority of Christians do not practice this. In fact, most Christian's think snake handling has nothing to do with Christianity.

It's like Reza said, because Christianity has a central hub that kind of dictates what's right and wrong within the bible, this wouldn't fit the bill. If you didn't have the Pope and the Vatican, and someone that amassed enough of a following to make a difference, this could become commonplace.

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” – Coretta Scott King

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

If that was true, then we'd have say that those snake handlers aren't Christians. How about the Westboro Baptist Church? If there was indeed a central authority on Christianity, then they wouldn't be Christians either. In fact, it's hard to see how you could have as fragmented a scene as you have in Christianity between all the different denominations if there was indeed a central authority. I'd submit that there isn't one. Sure, there's a central authority in Catholicism but that's really about it. There's no pope like figure that I am aware of in the other Christian churches.

All this talk about snake handling, Eric will be along shortly.

Oh but we're talking about snakes not worms.

I guess when I think of Christianity, Catholic is what comes to mind. Thanks for the clarification.

Anyone that calls themself a Christian and believes Jesus was the son of God is a Christian. What rituals they practice are controlled by what denomination they subscribe to. Or they can make up whatever they want and still call themselves Christians. Mormons are Christians and have a lot of differences with say, baptists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_handling

Snake handling, also called serpent handling, is a religious ritual in a small number of Pentecostal churches in the U.S., usually characterized as rural and part of the Holiness movement. The practice began in the early 20th century in Appalachia, and plays only a small part in the church service. Practitioners believe serpent handling dates to antiquity and quote the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Luke to support the practice

I like it when my serpent gets handled.

You would not believe how many people have asked me if I was on a mission trip, as if Christianity needs spreading in the Philippines. It's amazing what some people think. I think it would be more appropriate for the Philippines to send missionary's to the states.

Don't send them here to the US unless they're fully prepared to be oppressed in practicing their religion. Now, if they convert to Islam, they will have full freedom and red-carpet treatment.

Do you have an example of Christian's being " oppressed in practicing their religion"?

Yeah, you know it's not bad enough being Christian in an Islamic country where radicals kill, main, and cut off the heads of Christians. To be Christian in America is not a good thing anymore. But hell, it really doesn't matter much. Their Christians. They deserve it.
