HA In Brazil I'd get "a importada" (the imported girl). "Oh, are you bringing the importada?"

But otherwise gringa, predictably.

Oh, and "estadunidense" instead of americana because we're all americans in N and S America, right?

Just curious....what do the peeps in your SO's country classify you as?

Everyone in Egypt identified me as an "American". They would say where are you from and I'd say, "Boston". Then most would be lost so I'd say, " the United States".

Still.....lost look in their eyes so my husband would say, "she's Amreeekan", and then bingo ... a look of recognition.

I'd try the first few times to say, "no, not just American but United States" and then go on to explain that Canada is in America and so is Mexico, etc. Finally I gave up and I'd just answer, "i'm amreeeekan".

It's worse for people coming to USA from another country!

I am from England and I was surprised by the lack of knowledge the US has about the rest of the world. They don't even know that England is different to Great Britain and the even the United Kingdom. They don't know that we have our own flag! In Philadelphia there is an Avenue with all the flags of the world lining thee streets (well almost). As i was walking down it there was Scotland, then Wales. A bit further there was Northern Ireland. Kept walking.....United Kingdom (Union Flag). No England!!!!!! No cross of St George!!!!!!! I mustt admit I was stunned so i asked my wife why it wasn't there and she said shee didn't even realise it was different. And she is well travelled and well educated. Amazing.

We are referred to as American's pretty much everywhere.

Not in Latin America- American is used as anyone living in the American continient (yes 1 not 2 continents). In spanish you call a citizen of the United States - Estadounidense

Agreed ... but it drives me batty when people say that means that Americans shouldn't call themselves Americans because that's not what the cognate in a different language means. I'd never call myself americana when speaking Spanish (although Mexicans do use it to mean someone from the US), I use estadounidense or norteamericana of course; but in English the adjective "American" means someone from the US. And the fact that the Spanish word americano means pretty much anywhere in the Western Hemisphere doesn't mean that the English word "American" should mean the same thing. It makes as much sense as saying that since the Spanish word embarazada means pregnant, English speakers should never say "I'm embarassed" unless they mean "I'm pregnant."

true there, false cognates in one language doesn't mean they are cognates in another language.. they're relative to their lang..

and even if the proper spanish tells u that 'americano/a' is referring to a person living in the American continent.. we all know that the 'rule' is not applied to common life.. it's more used to say 'americano' than 'norteamericano' or 'estadounidense'..
