Can green card holder volunteer in USA?

Hi, i still get no job since i entered to USA, for some specific reasons i can't start working at this moment, i will travel soon overseas for 1 month and this will be against the potential job requirement, can i volunteer as a LPR ? is that legal to do? or it's illegal because i can work and get paid ? thank you for your clarification
