I think your fiance should sell the TV. Electronics are much cheaper in the US, so you would probably lose money trying to bring it over here.

He doesn't want to sell it. It's less than a year old & very expensive. It's a huge flat screen 3D TV. If anything, we'll leave it at his house. It will be our summer home. But he wants to try to bring it if he can. The computer tower is what he's throwing a fit over having to bring. Edited by Meghan&Andrey

That's the best idea.

But he wants to try to bring it if he can. The computer tower is what he's throwing a fit over having to bring.

Towers with power supplies are very cheap (TigerDirect.com), so have him remove the components, pack those well in a box and send that via DHL or something like that.

He claims it's too expensive & powerful to replace. Trust me..I've tried reasoning with him. He's an IT guy. He thinks it's his life. I said we could buy another & he says no we can't.

For the TV leave it. monitors are much less expensive here, not even worth trying, get him something new and big when he arrives

He could bring the computer with him, I would take it as a carry on and claim that it is a gaming computer. not always easy but it is possible

He would probably make money selling the TV in RU and then buying one here. Or leave it there, it doesn't make sense to ship a TV over really. Computer he just needs to break it down and bring the parts and buy a new tower ETC.

He will need to make some compromises here, unless he wants to pay the premium to have it his way. Diana sold all her electronics that didn't fit in her carry on and just pooled the money together as savings.

Hm, I'm also an IT guy (at least in my past career) but find idea of bringing huge TV or big PC tower from Russia to US not worth the trouble. People don't travel with such items, seriosuly. Either sell this TV and buy another one in US either leave it at home. It just doesn't worth to bring it across the ocean. No offence or anything please, I'm not trying to be mean, but in Russia we joke sometimes about ourselves that "we love to create obstacles in front of us so we can heroically overcome them". Sorry, but I think that's the case that fits perfect here. :)

About PC... I left my desktop at home for the same reason, I took my laptop with me. If he really wants to bring it, I would pack most expensive parts in a small box to ship or pack in luggage (CPU, videocard, hard drive...), this way it will take less space and will be way less heavy. But I wouldn't even consider bringing computer case itself, PSU or any accessories (monitor etc.), I would sell it in Russia and buy replacements in US.

When I was moving to the US my idea was that I can bring everything that fits into 2 luggage bags with max weight and couple of standart national mail boxes. Everything else had to be turned into money or left behind if it wasn't worth it.
