Tax filing extension: Lessons learned

I had initially sent an AOS package with erroneous information. After a few weeks I realized my error and then resubmitted a fresh AOS package. Before submitting the second time, I spoke with 3 clerks at NVC on how to enter earnings information for the most 3 recent years, as I had filed an extension for 2013. They all told me to start with 2012 as the most recent year and its associated income. So that is what I did: 2012/$xxxx

When the checklist arrived for the first AOS package (like expected) they had listed this particular item as an issue. They wanted me to put 2013 with income of $0,0. Now I realized that the second package I sent was also incorrect. I immediately called the NVC and spoke with 4-5 clerks. They all gave me different answers- some said 2012/$xxxx. Others said 2013/$0,0.

Frustrated I asked to be connected with a supervisor. I explained to the supervisor that I was getting conflicting information. She asked if I had put 2013 some place in the form. I said yes; at the bottom I had made a comment stating that I had filed for 2013 extension. Then she told me not to worry about it and that they would probably accept the second package.

So the second AOS was approved after that.

Lessons learned: If you file an extension for 2013, make sure to list 2013 as your most recent year and state an income of $0.0. If not, atleast make a note at the bottom stating that you have filed for an extension and provide that evidence. In fact I had to do this for 3 applications (wife and step kids).

All 3 cases finally got cases completed yesterday.
