Hi everyone,

I think I am a little too "literal" in reading these documents sometimes because I'm worried I will screw them up and have to do them again and delay everything! So, I thought I'd ask some questions to hopefully avoid that :)

1. I am filling out the I-864 for my husband's visa. I will also have to submit a joint sponsor form that my step-father will fill out. But at least for this form, am I reading correctly: some things are repetitive? For example, Part 1 of the form is about me--the Sponsor--and so is Part 4 (Info on the Sponsor)? So I literally have to fill out my name, address, etc. more than one? I realize it's minor, but I didn't know if I need to mention my joint sponsor in Part 4 instead...

2. Part 2, Question 1: Info about the Immigrant (name, etc), is this the same info for Part 2, Question 2.a (Family Member 1)? I'm only sponsoring one person.

Thanks. Sorry if this is convoluted or confusing!

Part 1 you list your name and reason for filing, which is 1a.

Part 2 is about the intending immigrant, their name and address.

Part 3 you just say Yes, you sponsoring the person named in Part 2. If no family members are also immigrating, then the sections for family members will be left blank.

Part 4 is your name again, and your address and such. You never list the joint sponsor's info. They will have their own separate I-864 to fill out.

Thanks for the help. Another question in Part 5 question 7 (I'm the petitioner, filling this out--I need a joint sponsor): Optional: If you have siblings, parents or adult children with the same principal residence who are combining their income with yours by submitting I-864..." Do I put "1" here? And then my joint sponsor puts "1" as well--indicating me? Essentially, it's just me and my step-father filling this out for our incomes. We both need to fill out I-864, but does a "1" count here in this case on both of ours?

No. That is for counting a household member that is filling out an I-864A. A joint sponsor's household count is separate from yours. They are not combining incomes with you. They are filling out their own separate I-864. You count yourself, your dependents, anyone you sponsored before and your spouse. The joint sponsor counts themself, any spouse, dependents, anyone they have sponsored before plus your foreign spouse.

Thank you so much for your response. Another question, if you don't mind. On the Document Cover letter--in the Financial Documents section--it says, "Proof of Relationship." Does this mean proof of relationship between me and my step dad who is my joint filer? What kind of thing should I provide?

And for IRS Tax Transcript, is that the Return or Account Transcript? Maybe ill include both *_*

I assumed I had to use an I-864, and that if I wanted to include my mom (but I dont), I would use I-864a. Is that correct?

This has been helpful for me too. I have a question. I make over the poverty line, but I'm worried that my past few years of tax returns are going to show I'm unstable (I was in grad school and working part time, so I never made enough until this year). Now, I do and I'm thinking of asking my step dad to help out with my husbands's visa. I live with my step dad, so am I technically asking him to combine his income with mine? We file separate taxes. What form do I use? We are in the same household so I thought I-864a, even though I'm not a dependent.
