Uzbekistan Exit Visa

Uzbekistan is one of the few countries left that require its citizens to have an exit visa. My question is: what happens when the exit visa expires?

My wife's exit visa will expire in April 2015. We want to know, can she renew the visa here in the USA? If so, how? We've tried to call the embassy in Washington about this, but we almost always get an answering machine that is unable to take messages. So, we have not been able to ask the embassy about this.

Does she have to go back to Uzbekistan to get he visa renewed?

What, if any, are the consequences of letting the visa expire? Will she be fined if/when she visits her family in Uzbekistan? Will this make it harder for her to renew the visa?

Any help, or experience, in this issues will be appreciated.

You can go through the embassy (Washington) or consulate (NY) to get an official change of residence from wherever in Uzbekistan to your home in the USA.

There are a series of forms and fees that you can find in the Russian or Uzbek version of the embassy web sites (this information cannot be found on the English versions). After that it is a matter of filling out forms and paying fees. The main difficulty here is getting an Apostille of the wedding license (which was in the USA). That requires several steps (forms and fees) from the local government that issued the license and then more steps (forms and fees) from the state government that issues the licenses. Nothing difficult -- just annoying.

Thanks - got the apostille done for our marriage license. My wife thinks she must return every 2 years to renew the ovir, but I am encouraging her to apply for the permanent ovir so she does not have to worry about being forced to return.
