Traveling to Hong Kong - Tips?

Hey,

So many people on here from around the world, I thought this might be worth a shot for some opinions... I am planning on traveling to Hong Kong for vacation on my own in November. Looking for tips on places to go, areas to avoid etc. I am starting to do some research, but it is so easy to find the touristy stuff and so difficult to know if it is a tourist trap or worth my time. Generally I just like to wander, pick an area of the city and then see what I find, but would love to hear from any one with some thoughts on it too!

Second question is how bad is the situation over there? My family and fiance are really getting nervous about me going alone (They always get nervous seeing as I am alone and female, but not they are SUPER nervous). My plan has always been until the Canadian government puts up an advisory, I will keep my plans. The media is making things look like they are really escalating and spreading through the city. Any Hong Kongers around on the forums that can give their feel on the situation? (If that is not what citizens are called, sorry I am ignorant!)

This is my final trip as a unmarried person. I am so excited! I really hope I don't have to cancel.
