Do I need ceritifed copy of marriage certificate or oriignal in Social Security Office to get my wife a social security card and change her name.

We were told we had to wait until we received something offical from the USCIS before she would be able to change her name on her social security card. When we received her EAD we went back also taking the certified marriage certificate from our county's recorder's office and they processed it. It took about six weeks to get the new card. Good luck

ok well for me this is how it went:

I got here 12/17

got married 12/30 and applied for social security on 01/04 and took my origional marriage certificate and passport including visa. my office was good the guy checked to see if youcan change your name AND apply at the same time and you can, he said it can just take a little longer (haven't receive as of 01/25) because the local USCIS have to change and check everything. So it can be done, I guess it just depends on who you see.

Original is fine, at least it was for us.

Take the original and they will make a copy and return the original to you - if they don't ask them to return it. They did it for us in Denver. Good Luck

well I'm a US citizen so this probably won't help but I will say what they told us. They told us to change my last name even though I'm a US citizen that we had to have the certified copy of our marriage license that had my date of birth on it before they could change my last name on my card.
