A new Department of Defense program revealed to Congress yesterday will encourage the U.S. military to recruit illegal immigrants who possess certain high-demand skills.

Those high-demand skills include fluency in Arabic, Chinese, Persian, or Pashto, which is spoken primarily in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of Iran, according to USA Today.

The announcement expands a program that targets legal immigrants to include illegals who have applied to remain in the United States under President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Current estimates suggest that as many as 2.1 million illegal immigrants could potentially take advantage of the program under the current definition of those eligible to remain in the country under DACA, which the president enacted by executive order. However, the president is thought to be considering a massive expansion of the DACA program after the November midterm elections.

So while American citizens are being forced out of the military every day in an effort to downsize and save money, now illegals can up and join. Makes sense to me...

Not sure of the demographic on soldiers getting kicked out. But I do know that approximately 1700 captains and majors got pink slips this year who were not up for promotion selection. And that doesn't include warrant officers nor enlisted.

They're getting rid of the free ride people. If your evaluations are just meh or you're one of those people who barely make a passing grade on the PRT, you're in the firing scope.

It's been going on for a while now, starting back in 2003 when they revamped the PT instruction to target the folks who were grossly out of standard. Then came PTS(perform to serve for the Navy) when they started looking at the rates that were overmanned. Either you changed jobs, make rank, or get kicked out. Now it's called FleetRide. And everyone who's not an E7(I don't know the officer cutoff, probably in the range you mentioned) are targets. The only reason I'm allowed to retire is because I was grandfathered by virtue of being prior Army and coming in at a reduced pay grade.

They're getting rid of the free ride people. If your evaluations are just meh or you're one of those people who barely make a passing grade on the PRT, you're in the firing scope.

Mostly linguists I'd say. Since a lot of American might not be fluent in languages that are critical to the mission.

Before 9/11, the military was the best job to have. TA for school, moving to exotic places every three years or staying somewhere for God knows how long, after 20 years, get a paycheck and benefits for the rest of your life. Hell, I met folks that refused to get out. One Master Chief was in for 38 years before they forced her to retire. I think 9/11 made the big wigs take a good look at who they were sending over to fight and that's why they said, either produce or GTFO.

Some of that is true. And trimming the fat is part of any corporate cutback, and should be done occasionally. I'm not compaining about that, even though some of the "fat" being trimmed probably isn't truly fat, and I can assure you I have seen some getting to stay who ARE part of the fat, but they missed the cut for one reason or another (won't go there in this thread).

What I am saying is that while the US is downsizing the military to supposedly save money, and the train must always go on, so you need a certain amount of new recruits, why offer that position to an illegal alien as opposed to a US citizen? Linguists, you say? I have no idea the numbers, but I doubt there's all THAT many illegal aliens that speak the critical languages of Arabic, Persian, and Chinese, nor Korean, Pashto, Urdu, Indonesian, Swahili, and Hausa. (The Army ROTC program is offerning financial incentives for kids to take these languages in college, which is nice).

Here's a short list of army critical MOS's, you can decide for yourself if a typical illegal immigrant could fill some of these slots:

12D diver

12P prime power production specialist

18B Special Forces weapons sergeant

18C engineer

18D medical sergeant

18E communications sergeant

18F assistant operations and intelligence sergeant

31D criminal investigation special agent

35L counterintelligence agent

35P cryptologic linguist

35Q translator/interpreter

37F psychological operations specialist

38B civil affairs specialist

79R recruiter

All of those jobs except the language ones will require specialized training. Why pay an illegal alien to go to school and then career bonuses as opposed to a USC? It seems like a country should take care of their own citizens first, then legal immigrants, and last (if ever) illegal aliens. But that's just my line of thinking.

I think at least three of those would fit depending on the person.

I only hit 18 years in 2012, before then I was safe because I had prior service and had to start over in the regards to rank progression. If I stayed Army or went into the Navy first and did my entire career there, I'd be further along.
