(Reuters) - It is more than 23 years since Arab countries last made common cause to join U.S.-led military action, and it has taken the threat of Islamic State to persuade them that any public backlash in an already turbulent region is a price worth paying.

Of the five Arab states named by Washington as supporting U.S.-led strikes against the jihadist group in Syria, Bahrain, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) confirmed they had actually flown sorties. Saudi Arabia said it had "participated in military operations", and Qatar was believed to have offered only logistical or political support.

But association with the attacks, after years of U.S.-led wars that have antagonized Muslims around the world, is a risk these states are ready to run to quash a group that promises to refashion the Middle East as an Islamic caliphate.

"We see Islamic State as an existential threat. If we don't put a stop to it, it will expand into our area," said Sami al-Faraj, an adviser to the Gulf Cooperation Council, which groups Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

Where is Iran and Syria in this list? Oh of course, they're still our enemies and the west will continue with its mission to overthrow them once ISIS is dealt with. Next up ISIS 2.0.

For the ignorati, the narrative being marketed is "Arabs at one with the USA".

They know exactly how many sorties have been flown by the US and how many have been by anyone else. So why not just tell us that known number? Saying "sorties" have been flown across this half-dozen or so countries tells me the answer is probably two. Two out of hundreds so it is more likely to be 1% than it is any significant number. From the white house came the instruction to our military that at least two sorties will be flown by Arab pilots so that this article right here can be written with exactly this wording.

But my what propaganda value. Oppressive dictatorships that have beheaded far more people than ISIS give us a token sortie so long as we hold their panties up for them. The fact the USA had to man the entire battle space with tens of billions in assets before we could even get a single token sortie out of these corrupt dictatorships is actually a story that is nearly the exact opposite of the propaganda.

what does "flown sorties" mean?

It's a nickname for a certain kind or women's underwear. There are some kinds of women's underwear that are hard to tell what they are made of and whether they are everyday, or special day. Those underwear that do not fall into a special category are reserved for the "sort of" category; sorties for short. Flown sorties are those underwear that have been worn on a long flight without changing.

Did your mother ever tell you what a total weirdo you are?

i'm truly embarrassed that i have been a woman all my life and never knew about flown sorties. then again the longest flight i've been on was one hour so, never had the pleasure. thanks for the women's undergarment knowledge
