We are trying to fill out another set of I-864s for my husband and our joint sponsor and I just have a few clarifications regarding the forms which I'm hoping someone could help us with. It may sound simple enough but only would like to make sure I understand the instructions/verbiage on the forms. (Maybe it's my language skills :))

Question # 1: Having 2 joint sponsors means the primary sponsor (my husband) and TWO other joint sponsors, am I correct? Therefore, on Question #1 of form I-864 (since we only have one joint sponsor), our sponsor will select "Box D: I am the only joint sponsor."

Question #8: "I am sponsoring the immigrant named in Part 2 Above." - Here, both of them will select "Yes" Am I correct?

Question 19: Citizenship and Residency: Both of them are US. Citizens therefore, they both select "U.S. Resident?"

As always, thank you so much to all the awesome VJers who'd be able to help!

1) Yes, that's correct. You can have three sponsors total (1 primary and 2 joint) but since you only have one joint then yes, they would be the only joint sponsor :)

2) Yes

3) Yes, don't overthink too much :) If they're us citizens then of course they put that they're us citizens :) Don't forget to include evidence of citizenship (birth certificate, etc) for your joint sponsor though (we forgot it).

Thank you so much! I know it's seems relatively simple. I guess I'm just being paranoid about making a mistake. Thanks againa for your help! :)

It's definitely not all simple! It's really easy to make a mistake on something like this.

Filed: Timeline

Miranda&James,

Point of clarification: Any one alien can have only 2 sponsors, the Sponsor and 1 Joint Sponsor. A 2nd Joint Sponsor comes into play only when there is more than 1 alien in a family group being sponsored and the 1st Joint Sponsor is sponsoring only some of the them.

For example, a foreign spouse with two children. If the 1st Joint Sponsor can sponsor only the spouse and 1 child, a 2nd Joint Sponsor can be used for the other child.

O ok, I thought that I remembered hearing somewhere that the number of joint sponsors allowed had been bumped to two. Must have missed the need to have other family members needing sponsoring bit.
