I remember blushing when a male cabin attendant on Virgin Atlantic called me darling- I had been away from London for a couple of years!

I don't recall ever seeing a politician refer to a woman as "Sweetheart, Darling, Honey or Sugar" during a live interview. Those types of names are unprofessional and can often be taken as sexist or demeaning in a business setting. Most guys I know save the cute nicknames for when they're with their significant others.

That's what I mean when I say folks not from the south wouldn't understand. Cuz it's the norm here. Not just between lovers.

But I agree it may not fit well in a work force or political environment. A lot depends on the demeanor of the speaker. I can say "yes dear" to my wife and get the stink eye for it...
