Does anyone know at the N 400 Naturalization interview, regarding the old passports:

1) Do they have to be all the old passports?

2) Does the current passport need to be valid ( Not expired). If it is expired, does it need to be renewed before the interview?

Thank You

1- They ask for all passports, so if you have them, take them with you, but they'll only be interested in the passports you've held since you've become a permanent resident. Most people don't have all their old passports and I've never seen that create a problem. However, if you just take with you a brand new passport that you just got, they're going to ask where your last passport was so they can check your travel dates.

2- Your passport doesn't have to be currently valid and you don't have to renew it for the interview. Thy just want it to verify your travel and if it's expired that just means you haven't traveled recently.

I just had my interview yesterday, and my interviewer did not pay too much attention to passports. He look through them to check my name and some of my travel dates, maybe 15 seconds.

Remember your passport belongs to your own country's government, so the USA doesn't have any jurisdiction over them. They only want the passports to prove whatever information you gave them about travel dates, they should not care if they are expired or not.

On my part, I only took the last 2 passports, the current one and the last expired one, because in those 2 is where they can check where I have been the last 5 years, as they want to know this in the application form. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Thank you. I have all the travel on the passport after becoming a permanent resident on this passport but it expired last month so i was thinking whether i needed to renew it or not since the interview is about 3 weeks away.

Thank you for your help

For me, My interview was very simple, he just asked the same questions you already have answered in N400 form just to make sure everything still the same. Then he asked 4 simple questions, about the capital of USA, my state capital, what is an amendment, and what day was the independence day. Then he asked to read "when is flag day" and then write "flag day is in June". Then he said congratulations you passed. Very nice man.

He did not ask me about taxes or anything like that, But I didn't have any due or unpaid taxes, so I was never asked to bring anything extra to my interview. I just brought all paperwork they listed on the yellow sheet and whatever applied to me on "required documents" list. For me that was just my green card, driver's license and 2 passports (1 expired).

I'd recommend to go over your application and for anything that you marked "yes" to, bring appropriate paperwork related to that yes question.

Also I had my ceremony the same day because I live 3 hours away from that office, so I got lucky and did it all the same day. Good Luck!
