Social Security number and drivers license (IL)

My fiance would like to get his Illinois driving license. Does he need his social security number before he can do this, and if so, how long will it take him to get his social security number? How do we go about getting his license? the DMV website for illinois doesn't say anything about international drivers. Please help!

Here in Georgia, my husband had to have his EAD, along with his SSN to get his license. The requirements vary by state so it might be best if you call and find out what IL requires. Good luck!

The Illinois DMV site states that he can use his out-of-country license for 90 days. After that he will need to have an Illinois Driver's License. (You will find this under 'New to Illinois" on the left hand side of their website).

He will require a SSN. Illinois does accept I-94s as long as it is still valid along with a valid passport. It looks like he will require his birth certificate or passport to prove his age along with some proof of his residency address. For Georgia I used a bank statement addressed to me at my Georgia address.

He should apply for his SSN when he has been here 2 weeks so that his name will be in the Immigration SAVE system. It will take about another 2 weeks or so to arrive. He will need a valid I-94 with more than 2 to 3 weeks of validity left on it. If the I-94 is expired he will have to wait for an EAD for both the SSN and the Driver's License. These are things you want to attend to as soon as you can before the I-94 expires. Good luck.

As previously stated his foreign drivers lisence will be good for 90 days (the same timeframe as his I-94).

I got my Illinois driver lisence within 90 days of arriving and presented my unexpired I-94, my passport and birth certificate and some items of mail addressed to me at my new address. I think I had my social security number when I applied but it wasn't a requirement.

I was allowed to sit the theory test and then take the actual test on the same day and left the local DMV office with my lisence that day.

A word of advice (and this probably applies to anyone in ANY state)... do not go to do your test or apply for your lisence at the end of the month. End of the month is tag renewal time and the lines are LONG !!
