We need a lot more of Malcom Mitchell in the world . Imagine a kid working hard to get something and being shown utmost respect by a bunch of old white women.

Respect is earned

Kathy Rackley never expected to bump into a college football star while roaming through her local Barnes & Noble. In fact, she had no idea she had done so even after striking up a conversation with one.

The Athens, Georgia woman was searching for a book when she met Malcolm Mitchell — number 26 on the University of Georgia Bulldogs football team.

“I mean a chance encounter in a bookstore, how wonderful is that?” Kathy told the CBS Evening News, adding that she had no clue who Mitchell was.

“None whatsoever,” she said.

Instead of chatting with him about football, Rackley bragged about her book club.

“I mean he like stepped back and he said ‘You did? You did?’ and he said, ‘Can I join your book club?’” Rackley recalled to CBS Evening News.

“And I said, ‘I don’t know if you want to join mine. We’re all 40-, 50-, and 60-year-old women.’”

That didn’t bother Mitchell. Now, as CBS Evening News reported, one of the nation’s top wide-receivers meets each month with the group.

He’s the only male and far younger than the other members, but he doesn’t care.

“Somebody called me a nerd. That’s not a word that I’m used to hearing,” he said. “I was proud of it… It’s like a badge of honor to me, knowing where I came from.”

Mitchell told the CBS Evening News that when he first entered college, he could only read at a junior-high level. Since, he’s put everything he has into changing that.

At almost every chance Mitchell gets, he is reading. When the CBS Evening News asked him for his most proud accomplishment, football wasn’t even on his list.

“I finished the ‘Hunger Games’ series in about two days,” Mitchell answered, noting that football always “came natural.”

“That’s a gift. I had to work to read,” he said.

He should be respected for being a human being.

Sorry disagree. Just being human does not earn you respect.

He should be respected for working hard and being a good decent human

I think we have two different opinions about respect. I'm talking about the basic respect you should show anyone. You're talking about looking up to someone correct?

Ain't that the truth. And 'some' should really be modified to 'many'.

Nature Boy ! This is such a great story ! I always luvs to read about jocks interacting with Aunties and furthering their brainpans.

But I digress. When you post again, could you edit out all the useless crap_ from the copy/paste? It detracts from the actual content of the message, greatly.

-----

I gotta tell ya, a jock smart enough to know he needs a group of mentors in that particular demographic - that's a smart fella ! Plus he probably gets some home-cooked food during each book club meeting, so that's a plus ! and yes, these Aunties have daughters in his age group, so that's a plus.

Connubial Bliss via reading, always a plus !

That he entered college only able to read at a Junior High level is a travesty. :(

That he has seized the opportunity to do something about it, on his own initiative, is admirable and well worth publicising.

If he inspires more kids to undertake reading, and other learning pursuits, when our education system has let them down, then he will have helped far more than just his own future.

That the education system failed him is what needs addressing.

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself
