I had my interview yesterday. Everything went smoothly. In and out in 20 min. The usual drill... 5 questions... went over my application.. Yes/No Questions.. and then she said that she will recommend my application for approval.

Now have to wait for the Oath letter.

what were the questions asked??

did your examiner ask you the exact dates of where you worked and lived or she read you the dates you put on the application and you said yes to all?

Things are finally looking up. I just received an email informing me that my interview has been scheduled. Whatever got my case dislodged seems to have worked, because I was only "in line" for two days. I hope to get the hard copy with the actual date soon.

Congrats! Do yo happen to remember the civics questions asked?

1. When was constitution written

2. State bordering Mexico

3. When do we register for selective service

4. What is freedom of religion

5. Cant remember but I think this was one of the oceans.

Yes. She went through everything in my application - address, employment, spouse info, kids info. Everything with exact dates.

Now waiting for Oath. Is there a website to check the timeline for Oath at Fairfax, VA?

To Deidre (or anyone else that can provide information),

When you had your interview, near the end you said this: "All done! She then asked for me to read out the Oath, and then asked me to also sign the last few pages."

Were you asked to read the Oath aloud, or just to yourself? Has anyone else had this similar experience? Please let me know, as I am scheduled next Tuesday for the interview and don't know all the words in the oath, as they are quite long and unusual.

(Since they only require you to read one sentence during the reading test, it doesn't seem necessary that you read the oath aloud also...)

Anyone's input would be appreciated.

If you read the naturalization guide or the USCIS policy manual, you'll see that there are three parts to the English test: reading, writing, and speaking. The speaking part of the test is simply demonstrated by your ability to respond to the questions and go over the application. For example, there was an applicant who posted on Vijay a long time ago who said that after the question about being a member of the Communist Party, the interviewer asked him if he knew what communist meant. I think this was just to test the applicants ability to speak. I imagine they only do this with people who are clearly struggling and seem to have just memorize the answers without really being able to speak English.

So it is very possible that the interviewer will ask you to read to the oath out loud. He will not expect you to memorize it. I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you were able to write your question the way you did then you'll easily pass.

For a review of each step of my N-400 naturalization process, from application to oath ceremony, please click here.

Hi Sameldrum1,

Good question! And you know it's interesting you ask, because I too am now wondering if it were just me?!

Any which way.... yes, once the IO completed reviewing my file and I passed all civics questions and the reading/writing portion, as she was finalizing all the things she needed too, she handed me a piece of paper, which in fact is the last page of the N-400 application - page 21 of 21.

And she asked me to read aloud the Oath of Allegiance (part 17):

"I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen;

that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic;

that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;

that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law;

that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law;

that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and

that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God."

Then once I read out the whole thing to her, I printed my name and signed the bottom of that page.

Hope this info helps :) I think by its point they aren't testing your English skills but you def would practice reading and pronouncing the words, coz even me an English speaker have never ever said or heard the word "abjure" or "potentate" so as I was reading it out aloud I was thinking to myself 'here's hoping I pronounced it properly!'... :)

Yes I was told you can reschedule but only once. If someone can't make it to two different oaths ceremonies they basically have to start over!

Since you have not gotten your letter yet though I am almost certain it will be a little further out :) ...fingers crossed :)
