A few things. It doesn't make much sense to respond to concerns about discrepancies in wait time by saying that there's no logic to the process and then cite people who filed in April just now getting interviews as evidence why it's normal to still be waiting. Either there's a logic and some sort of an order, or there's not. If there were no logic, then not only would the status of people who filed this month not have any bearing on the wait, neither would the status of those who filed in April.

There clearly is some sort of an order; they're not throwing files in the air and picking up the ones that happen to land on top. The order may not be perfect, but order it is. And the fact that the vast majority of people get placed "in line" for an appointment a few days after their biometrics with stragglers getting put "in line" after few weeks, whereas someone else (myself for example) has been waiting for 3-4 months without even being placed "in line" is a pretty obvious sign that something outside of the ordinary process is happening. Either it's a problem of notification (I'm "in line" but the notification isn't showing me as such for whatever reason), or there's something else that is holding up the process. In other words, there's nothing really normal about taking over 3 months to get "in line" for an appointment.

About the timelines for which cases are being processed. I think those are being misread on this forum an awful lot. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those are files that are being finalized, which is to say that these are people taking their oaths. So there's that. There's also the fact that those dates are often wildly old. So yes, it lists the status in Dallas as April 23 and Chicago as July 30, but you'll notice right above that that those processing dates haven't been updated since November 30. So unless you don't think they've processed any files in over two months, those dates aren't really very helpful.

Finally, yes, the process can take up to a year, but the normal time, the time that the USCIS shoots for (and the reason they've raised filing prices dramatically in order to afford more staff) is 5 months. So when I'm 4 months in to what's supposed to be a 5 month process without even being processed for the 2 steps that take the most time (getting an appointment once you're in line and getting an oath ceremony after your appointment), it doesn't seem unreasonable to be wondering what the hold-up is. I can understand how as a Canadian, the issue might not seem as pressing, but when you're a stateless person, as I am, the whole process takes on a different significance, especially since that stateless status is often the problem behind such delays, whether they're from bureaucratic processes like this or "random" security checks at the airport.

I think maybe it's not letting you set up an infopass because it hasn't even been that long at all! The N400 process can take up to a year and varies from field offices to even the actual applicant (background checks, country of orgin etc) . Some people in this thread are already US citizens, while others wont get an interview, like me, probably until May. I am filing in Dallas and it's pretty backed up (the USCIS website states they are currently processing N400 in Dallas from April 2014!). I saw on the July filers thread that someone in Dallas who filed in July 2014 JUST today got his interview date for March 2015 in Dallas...

I think it's important to remember (and we all know this because we are at the citizenship stage) that there is no logic to USCIS and you just need to otherwise occupy yourself on not focus on it so much. I'm from Canada and sponsoring a spouse takes up to 4 years (and that's with NO right to work and NO healthcare). In comparison, things are pretty quick in the US...

I can understand how as a Canadian, the issue might not seem as pressing, but when you're a stateless person, as I am, the whole process takes on a different significance, especially since that stateless status is often the problem behind such delays, whether they're from bureaucratic processes like this or "random" security checks at the airport.

I agree with you that there is a logic to it. I think you described the process well. Totally agree that the timelines people are quoting are way off.

Disagree that most people get placed in line right after biometrics. Many field offices (Houston for example) often wait months before placing most people inline. Then they get their interview scheduled very soon after that.

Also disagree that the average time is 5 months. That was true in 2013 and early 2014 but since about May things have slowed down. But if you just look at the monthly threads since May, Most people seem to be finishing in 7 to 8 months... if you're talking about the timeframe all the way to the oath. That's in general, not office-specific.

Regardless of that, I think you're right that you've been waiting too long. And having a passport that limits your ability to travel, or being stateless or having refugee status just puts more pressure on an applicant.

What have you done to follow up on your case?

Fellow Dallas applicant here. I am mad they are taking 7 months instead of 5...

Fellow Dallas applicant here. I am mad they are taking 7 months instead of 5...

Hello,

The process is quite ridiculous, but at least it has started to move, on Trackitt an August 18th 2013 flier just got notified on a scheduled interview. We can only track their progress and not worry what is causing the delay because we just might never know. I would update as soon as my hubby gets notified, his application was received 26th September 2013. We are still waiting. Hang in there y'all, soon it would be all over. Best of luck.

Hi Dordor, thanks for this update! Is this for Dallas?

As for other replies I've seen to my prior posts, I still do think there is no logic to the way things are done, with anything that is bureaucratic...I know and understand that USCIS has guidelines and timelines and whatnot, but overall, what I meant is that, it makes no sense how some people at the same field office go faster than others etc. That's why I said I don't worry about it and just go about my life and encourage everyone else to do the same.

As for those who are stateless and do not have a passport at all, that is inconvenient to say the least and you have my sympathies, but please keep in mind that we are lucky to live in the best country in the world and soon, things will take care of themselves.

Lastly, about the Dallas field office, I was there a couple of weeks ago to help a friend whose English is limited, and was able to inquire with someone who worked there about whats going on with N400. The answer was as all of us who live in Texas might expect: its the biggest state, with one of the highest population in Hispanic immigrants and they all sponsor their entire families so it backlogs the system quite a bit. Although I'm not super satisfied with that answer, since California has a similar population and yet, their field offices seem to be up to date in terms of timelines.

As I said, no logic

It's not discrimination...The system is severely back logged in regions where there is a high number of immigrants. And yeah, of course, it's red tape and it comes with its own set of problems, as it would in any other country.

Is it inconvenient for some more than others? Sure it is, but remember that the only people who have the inalienable right to be in the US are naturally born citizens, which you are not, which your husband is not and which I am not, either. No one owes us anything.

The process is not even that expensive or that long compared to other countries, such as mine, Canada where it's WAY more expensive to sponsor and it takes WAY longer. And hey, living in the US sure beats living in other parts of the world.

It's privilege to be in the US as an immigrant, not a right... I love this country wholeheartedly, and that is why I submitted my application to take an oath pleading my allegiance to it...I sure hope everyone else feels the same about the citizenship process :)

Well said.

One more point... USCIS is a self-funded agency.

Can they hire more people and finish the N-400 process in 2 months? Absolutely, but then the application fee would be $3000. Most people would still gladly pay that amount in order to become US citizens, but it would make it much less difficult for others.

Many of us have lived in the US for 10, 15, or 20 years. Waiting a few extra months to naturalize seems like such a minor inconvenience. Just look through the various threads... everyone thinks their case is special and they are being targeted... just this week; Santa Ana is the slowest office, no it's New York, no it's Atlanta, no it's Dallas, no it's Houston, no it's Los Angles. But 95% of the people on here are naturalized between 4 and 9 months of applying... why don't you just assume that it's roughly a year-long process and relax?

There are genuine cases where USCIS messes up applications... people wait a year to be interviewed or 2 years to get their oath date... these people should definitely complain. But if every one of us wrote to our congressman every time a letter is a week late, those representatives wouldn't be able to do anything for anyone. I think we just need to use good judgement and use VJ for advice. I've learned a lot from reading the older threads; I wish more people would do that.

Don't get me wrong; different people have different situations and some of them are in a hurry for very valid reasons... someone may be in a hurry to sponsor a relative who is about to age-out, for example, or someone may be in a hurry to apply for a dream job that requires citizenship... but unless there's something very important that you're going to miss out on unless you're get naturalized in May instead of June, then you should just sit back and get on with your life and be happy when you do become a citizen.

Oh right, thanks for adding the point about the agency being self-funded! I agree 100% USCIS should be self-funded, it's not up to citizens to pay for immigrants to come to the US. I've always thought they might perhaps offer a "premium service" option where you pay double, and your case gets adjudicated quicker (as long as it goes to a special department that works solely on premium service and it doesn't affect the regular service, of course). That's just a suggestion.

I think it's amazing we can come to the US and be allowed to one day become full fledged citizens. In the mean time, as a green card holder, you have the same rights (save voting and jury duty). When I think that in Mexico, you have to be a Citizen to own certain water front properties...Now that's harsh :)

Moving to the US and (and making it here in the US) is not for the faint of heart! But it sure as heck is a fun and challenging ride. I love this country!
