Keep working. Don't quit your job.

Visit her and let her come to visit you.

Meanwhile, look for a position in the U.S., doing your engineering thing. Best time to find a job is when you're already working. If your specialty is as unique as you think, maybe the new company would sponsor an H-1B work visa for you. (http://www.uscis.gov/eir/visa-guide/h-1b-specialty-occupation/h-1b-visa)

Suzaug, this is possible but I also work 7 days a week 9 months of the year and I'm on call for the rest so would actually be happy to have no work for 6 months and just basically be there. That's the ideal situation, however if that works or not, I don't know speaking from an immigration perspective.

I would also like that time off to be there as where she lives there is not much heavy industry and as such I would be looking at fly in fly out type jobs in another state, and all of that kind of stuff is a long shot.

B VISA is a long-shot. You're basically saying to immigration "I'm quitting my job so I can stay with my girlfriend while my divorce processes so I can marry her." Why would they let you do that? That's not what a B VISA is for - there's no "wait out divorce then get married and convert to a different VISA" VISA.

Yes, waiting sucks. So do long plane flights. People manage-and you get enough miles going that you get perks fast enough.

Keep your job. Visit on VWP. As long as you show ties to Australia, including return tickets, they seem relatively flexible about the amount of time you're using it. (My now-husband visited 3 times in 2013.)

And yes I have asked her to marry me and yes she will ofcourse was her answer. Sorry! Celebrating and a little happy as we meet on person in 80 hours but while this distance has been a pain it has also been a blessing that it has forced us both to be certain we loved the personality of each other before any other confusion set in. Sorry to post here just so happy!

Had to tell someone haha
