Hello,

So yesterday I posted about my passport issue.

I am going to have to renew my passport (expires in Feb2015), but apparently it is going to take 1 and half month until I have it, my case is at NVC right now, and since I am from Brazil, I am expecting to have interview date within a month, which I think it will be before I have my new passport in hands.

My questions are:

1 - Do I have to wait until I have my new passport to fill out DS-160?

2 - If my interview is scheduled before I have my new passport should I reschedule the interview or can I just attend the interview with my old passport?

3 - If I do have to reschedule my interview, how do I do so?

Any advices are greatly appreciated!

Thank you

I was told on here, that at the time of your interview, your Passport must have at least six (6) months remaining on it before the expiration date. My passport expires March 2015 and I made sure I renewed it early, although my I-130 is not yet approved. Try posting in the Brazil forum to see if there's anyone there with similar experience. Someone else can weigh in to give you more info.

Is there a way to get an expedited passport? Why does it take so long? I believe you can fill out the form with your current passport, but if they required the passport to be valid for at least 6 months they won't issue the visa right away. It looks like the consulate in Rio requires 8 months past visa issue date. I will post a link with instructions from the consulate.

My questions are:

1 - Do I have to wait until I have my new passport to fill out DS-160? Most likely if the passport numbers change.

2 - If my interview is scheduled before I have my new passport should I reschedule the interview or can I just attend the interview with my old passport? Yes

3 - If I do have to reschedule my interview, how do I do so? Email the Embassy; this happens all the time.

In regards to:

  1. Yes, you'll need the new expiration date for the DS-160, it should match the passport you'll be handing the officer to avoid any confusion.
  2. Yes, you should wait until you have your passport in hand.
  3. Email or call the embassy/consulate that sent you the interview notice. It's a common issue.

Someone else answered these well but I wanted to elaborate for you. :)

Hello!

Why does it take that long to get a passport?

Isn't it supposed to take 6 days?

"3 - Prazo de Entrega

A unidade da Polícia Federal verificará os documentos e coletará os dados eletrônicos e será impresso protocolo onde constará a data provável da entrega do passaporte, que será de no máximo 6 (seis) dias úteis."

http://www.dpf.gov.br/simba/passaporte/duvidas-frequentes

Unless you mean that you can't schedule an appointment for a month.

I don't know what state in Brazil you live in, but last week I was just told by the Police here in the RS that if you get there one day really early, or if you prove that you need an appointment asap, they can squeeze you in.
