WASHINGTON — Under pressure to do more to confront the Ebola outbreak sweeping across West Africa, President Obama on Tuesday is to announce an expansion of military and medical resources to combat the spread of the deadly virus, administration officials said.

The president will go beyond the 25-bed portable hospital that Pentagon officials said they would establish in Liberia, one of the three West African countries ravaged by the disease, officials said. Mr. Obama will offer help to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia in the construction of as many as 17 Ebola treatment centers in the region, with about 1,700 treatment beds.

I was pointing out that the difference between 1918 and now is that medical science has moved on a bit. I think that's pretty undeniable - but if you don't think it's true I'm happy to listen to your rationale.

If English were my first language I would say that you've fallen victim to sophistic thinking. To check if that is indeed the case, all you need do is separate your post in individual sentences, and read them separately, each on its own right:

1 - It is TRUE that Ft. Riley KS was ground zero for the 1918 outbreak of Spanish Flu.

2 - It is TRUE that sending 3,000 etc etc etc.

However putting both sentences together in one single paragraph doesn't automatically confer them the status of subordination. What it means is that, the outbreak of Spanish Flu in 1918 took place on American soil at a time when science had no means to detect, diagnose or even identify the causing agent of the disease. In addition there weren't any effective treatments available. Clearly, in 2014, the scenario couldn't be more different than that. Nowadays science can detect, diagnose, identify and even treat Ebola. We are much farther ahead with this outbreak than we ever were with the flu in 1918.

The job of these troops is not to bring the disease back in various stages as one might presume. The difference being in 1918 none of the infected men knew he was carrying the virus or that he was eventually going to succumb to the flu. Today, almost 100 years later, we can screen, detect and treat every single one of these troops, so their situation upon returning home is quite different from that of their counterparts of yore.

In essence, neither statement, individually or combined, is remotely applicable or comparable to the situation at hand today.
