Bringing cremated remains from US to Philippines?

Anyone have any information on the procedures for bringing cremated remains from US tot PI? We have a friend who asked my wife if she would transport his wife's remains to her family.

I wouldn't transport other family cremated ashes in general. Have you ever looked inside the box, there are teeth and bones, Kinda funky.

I would just tell them I am not comfortable doing that.

If you do transport, call airline and see if you can check bag or carry on, and I would make sure they have a card from the funeral home or crematory stating that the ashes inside are of the person and their birthdate and death date.

Thank you for the links. This was helpful, especially the packaging suggestions. I called the airlines, Delta, and they said she will need to have a certificate of death or cremation to show and may be carry-on or checked baggage. I am still a little curious to see if the Philippines has any further rules for entering the country.

Here are the instructions for the Los Angles Philippine Consulate on the procedures for shipping remains to the Philippines. If you have any additional questions, it would be best to contact the nearest Consulate to you. This is a nice favor your doing for your friend. Good luck. BTW, when you return from your trip please come back and update your thread with your experience for other to read. Nice way of sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.

Guidelines for Shipment of Remains to the Philippines

Requirements for Shipment of Human Remains/Cremated Remains to the Philippines:

Note: All documents to be submitted must be one (1) original and two (2) photocopies.

1. Certificate of Death;

2. Burial Transit Permit;

3. Health Certificate issued by the Department of Health stating that death was not due to a contagious disease and/or that the human remains do not pose any danger to public health;

4. Mortuary Certification that the casket contains only the human remains of the deceased or Crematory Certificate that the urn contains only the ashes of the deceased (notarized);

5. Duly accomplished Report of Death (ROD) for Filipino citizens (click here to download ROD Form;

6. Transportation arrangements:

a. Flight details;

b. Address and phone number of the consignee in the Philippines;

c. Address and phone number of the next-of-kin in the United States and in the Philippines;

7. Passport of the deceased or any other form of identification (Birth certificate/State Identification, etc.)

8. Payment of US$50.00 for Philippine passport holder or US$25.00 for American passport holder. Payment should be in cash, postal money order or cashiers' check only.

9. Releasing Time

a. APPLICATION SUBMITTED PERSONALLY - The Report of Death/Certification is released at least two (2) business days after receipt by the Consulate of the duly accomplished application form and all requirements.

b. APPLICATION SUBMITTED THROUGH MAIL OR COURIER - The Report of Death/Certification is mailed within five (5) working days after receipt by the Consulate of the duly accomplished application form and all requirements.

I was wondering if you ever got to bring the cremains to the Philippines?  I am planning on doing so and curious as to how yours went and what did you have to have as far as paperwork.
