London Medical and Drug Testing

Hey guys,

I'm starting to freak out a bit. Maybe over nothing but still thought I'd see if anyone has been in the same situation.

I have my medical in exactly one week. I have no history of illegal drug use and my police check says "No Trace". I also have a hard time sleeping and have recently tried valium (which has been very effective), just 10mg before bed on the nights that I just can't drift off. I've had maybe 5 in total in the last month. I have done research and have seen that taking it is not illegal BUT I don't have a prescription.

I understand that drug testing is not a 'usual' part of the medical but it can be done if you have a history of drug use. I am worried that they will take one look at me and presume that I am lying and that I am on drugs (I have blue hair, a septum piercing and a bunch of tattoos). I know this is quite presumptuous but I have been treated with some disdain in the past due to my appearance.

What should I do. Do I tick the box saying I have misused drugs (though I really feel that I haven't), or do I just tell them I have had some recently and explain why? I really don't want to ruin all of this just because I needed to sleep!

Help!!!

I haven't researched. Are you saying it is not illegal to use prescription drugs that were obtained without a prescription?

If you say you are using Valium, they likely will ask for a short report from your doctor explaining the condition that warrants it and the prescribed amount.

The drug testing is based on your report of having used drugs in the past, even once on your birthday ten years ago. Or smelling of weed like the guy who smoked a bit in his hotel the night before....Or acting high at the exam. It is not based on your hair color or tattoos, but you already know your choice of style can work against you in some situations. Not much you can do about that now but act charming, sane, polite, confident, and let them see the "good girl" within.

As we see here this subject wont come up unless you mention it. Its isn't about hair color nor tattoos; rather the documents and the laws.

do you mean actual valium or diazepam. when you say just 10mg i hope you know that this is the strongest dose available, most doctors are reluctant to even give you 2mg as this is a highly addictive drug. Since you dont have a prescription and you cannot legally buy it over the counter i feel that mentioning this could get you in a lot of trouble, its considered a class c drug.

http://www.release.org.uk/law/list-controlled-drugs

the fact you even have it without a prescription means you are breaking the law. Also valium reacts with a lot of different medications so if you take any other medications i implore you to go and see your GP. Im just thinking of your long term health.

To answer your question technically you have misused a controlled drug but they will not make any judgements based on your appearence. I had my medical a few weeks ago and they were extremely professional.

It would appear that the site I was looking at was a little confusing or I most likely just couldn't understand the legal stuff :(

It just says "Tranquilizers. i.e. Valium (diazepam), Librium (chlordiazepoxide), Ativan (lorazepam). It is not illegal to use them without prescription (possession) but it is illegal to give them/sell them to other people for non-medical use. In this case they are considered Class C drugs."

I should probably have looked further into this or better still, just dealt with it and stayed awake all night!

Thank you so much for all your advice. I have my appointment tomorrow so we will see how we go. I am the kind of person who will worry over anything if I have nothing better to do with my time. Haha

All I need to do now is get to the doctors by 2.30 tomorrow!! One step closer! So exciting!

Is that a UK law? I always thought possession of a drug like that without a prescription was illegal as well as selling it in the US.

I had a box full of all of the above in your quote, plus morphine (tablet and liquid), giant bottle of methadone, sleeping pills, and a LOT of other things from when my first husband had cancer. The DEA sponsors drug collection days to dispose of meds so I went to turn it in, nervous the whole time that I would get busted on the way. :(

Well in theory you had someone else's prescription which in england is not illegal as people are bed bound etc and have carer's family members that will pick up their scripts for them.

Over here you would have returned them to the prescribing GP and that would be the end of it. The only source of reference I have to answer your question for the u.s is border control and I saw people get arrested for things like carrying medical weed without the correct paperwork and for other drugs like you have mentioned they have been confiscated and that was then end of it( from the tv show border patrol america).

With class c drugs here its very much dependent on the quantities that you are carrying what action they woukd take. But anything you cannot buy over the counter you should have a prescription for otherwise you could find yourself in trouble but day to day who really gets stopped and searched by the police.

Personally I would say nothing. Try something like Melatonin which is over the counter and a natural sleeping remedy
