waiting in us for green card??

Hi

Sometimes when I read peoples threads it says they are waiting in usa for green card..can you stay in usa without a green card but not work as long as your us family provided for you...not something I would like to do but always wondered what the meant

Some people visit as tourists, either on the VWP or a B-2 tourist visa, but need to depart the US at the end of their period of authorised stay; they cannot "wait" indefinitely.
