Ugh it's something i'm worrying about because I don't know who pays what, when we should call the utilities companies, or even that everything will be ready to close on the 9th. We only have until the 7th to change the closing date due to needing more time for the loan.

hubs doesn't want to set up the utilities to the new house until we are done signing all the papers, i know they can do credit checks when you first get the main utlitlies... I start my new job on the tuesday so need to make sure we have everything after we move in. (it's all currently on right now, and I don't know if we pay the rest of Oct or if the old owners do?) I know he won't want to even spend a night without internet. Granted we have a few weeks to move so if we need to just sleep here until Monday, but sometimes utilities can take 1-2 weeks. (I'd assume it'd be easier since they're just switching who's paying, not any of the services. Everything is on currently except there's no internet. We don't have a choice who we use for electricity, gas, or water.)

You set up utilities before you close and they come and do a final meter reading close to the closing. You just tell them the date of the closing.

Utilities are pro-rated up until the day you close.

You change names the next day on the account.

Don't sweat the little things.

Do you have an attorney?

Don't sweat it. Nothing ever goes perfectly.

No we don't have an attorney. We have our loan person and our Realtor.

It is the seller that sets up the final reading. Not you. It's his account.

He gets the bill if he doesn't close the account. What do you care?

You only care after the closing, switch the account to your name.

If you have a buyer's agent, he'll be glad to help you out.

If you have a seller's agent, he wants to get paid, so he will help you out.

I"m sweating all this stuff because he isn't concerned but he's only ever lived in rented places where it generally isn't a big deal. For instance the last place I rented had utilities included except internet so I called and got them to come out and give me some internets. YAY nets!

I'm also the only one packing because he thinks that it's fine to just throw everything into boxes. We have this 3x3 cube thing that holds his cords etc. Yesterday he says "I consider that packed" I look at him and ask "are you insane? that's not packed! Everything will fall out of it and be everywhere. there is stuff just sitting on the top! You must be joking!" I laughed. I kept laughing at him because it was just so ridiculous. I don't even care if it just gets thrown in a box, but it can't stay that way to be moved. He's so haphazard about it all. I remember the uhaul when we moved down was just packed in the weirdest arrangement of things. This is why I prefer to do it all, because I know it A) won't move and break, B) get to the room it needs to get to, and C) be organized enough to take out and use when we unpack.

Books and non-dishes are packed. I'm about to pack the dishes after they're done washing (we can use paper plates and bowls.) Then I'll pack up HIS non-essential clothing because well, he won't. I want this whole house packed up and ready to go by Friday as he thinks it'll only take 1 day to move it all (Sat.) Which I think is insane as well. I've moved a lot. When he moved to guam and back he had movers help him. I mentioned that. And he's like.. welll I moved here by my self! And I'm like BECAUSE NOTHING WAS UNPACKED YET! doofus. /sigh.

You are both saying opposite things.

Either we have to call them ahead of time so the bills will be in our names after closing

or we call them after closing and do it.

I'd rather do it after all the loan is done because they do credit checks here for utilities and we dont' want a hit on his credit before the loan closing. I also want the utilities in both names as the title will be in both names. Or because my credit doesn't do anything towards this loan I can set up all the utilities in my name because it doesn't matter if my credit takes a hit.

ok, don't worry about the utilities.

The seller has to order a final reading. You can change account names the day of, or anytime after the closing. Don't worry about that. You can even contact the utilities and inform them of your intentions once you have a firm closing date. Don't do this until you close!

Packing, I thought you guys didn't have a lot of stuff?

Still need to get a washer and dryer, still need furniture, still need to buy tickets for the kid, still need a stove (might convince hubs to buy a whole kitchen set... which means not getting the double oven I want but means everything will be new?) but the jeep still needs fixing (the bearing and brakes at the least.)

yeah, exactly!

OK, I have owned many properties. In 2 states. I have ALWAYS changed names on the utilities accounts AFTER the closing.

1- In case the closing is delayed

2- To make sure I don't get billed any usage that wasn't mine.

You can't change names for the utilities until you

1- Have a lease on a property

2- own a property

right now, you're neither.
