We found a talented and gifted homeschool support group.

Everyone else gets the same thing: you are not allowed to talk about your children the same way everyone else does. Whatever theirs are doing is cute, whatever ours are doing is ruining their childhood; pushing them too hard; being the unrealistic and irresponsible parent, etc.

Bullying and harassment. It has been so wonderful! We can talk openly about reading, math, etc. and nobody finds malicious things to say about it. Most of them say that they just withdraw and protect themselves from abuse. The irony is that people want you to shut up and stay out of sight or else you are under attack. Then they call you anti-social.

It is a paradox. On the one hand ignorance is our enemy, so like the bisexual, gay, and lesbian community you have this desire to come out of the closet and show people you are decent human beings that deserve the same respect and dignity everyone else does. But as with a gay rights parade, doing that also makes you a target for tomato-throwers and jeering.

Just try to imagine if you show a picture of your child in a little red wagon and what you get is comments about how irresponsible you are as a parent to put them in such danger... how could you FORCE them to sit in that wagon. Obviously the smile on their face is the fear of getting beaten if you don't smile. We are not the only ones who have had child protective services called on them for the crime of learning too early.

How you interact with others is a problem most people just don't have to think about. The kids develop these defense mechanisms that are not because they're weird. It is because people are abusive towards them. It would be impossible for you to believe that someone could actually call Child Protective Services because you posted a picture of your child in a little red wagon. But that's what people will do to you when your wagon is red and everyone else's is blue. Then they are going to say you deserved it because after all - look at you bragging about your red wagon. Blue wagons are not bragging. And we always have to come down on the side of protecting the child. From their parents.
