Doing the math is useful, validation is useful,

but in the end, yer right, that's not the point.

Doing the math, however, can show the gap - and for some - knowing the gap , then making other plans to fill the gap, is useful.

One doesn't identify the gap only to stress out about it - there's other stuff to do, later.

IMO, it's personal finance 101.

well a spreadsheet on income and expenses can be helpful if accurate.

Personally I think they should focus on the costs living so far from work to see how much free rent actually costs. miles on car per month figured into the cost of replacing, repairs, gas. higher prices paid for required items locally per bought in town. etc...

OMG you've got me thinking on some fool who showed up in one of my Fil/Am groups on FB. Guy is married with children, and has fallen for some filipina who he met through one of those pay by the minute web cam places. He's borrowed on the family credit line over a 100K supporting her, buying land for her, and building a fancy house for her. Yet he's caught her a number of times running off with her local boy friends. He's never been with her in real life, and he thinks he's gonna leave his wife in a few years and live on 500 a month pension, living the simple life with her in the Philippines, even though he's now doling out thousands a month for her current life style. I've never seen such a case of stupidity and refusal to realize he's getting conned. All by a webcam girl he's never even seen in person.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I have done a similar spreadsheet but I'm adverse to confrontation and I think it will just cause more arguments.

I do see some light at the end of the tunnel. Next year child support payments for my step-daughters ends, and my little one will be at school so I have more time to work (for pay). Both those things will help a lot with cash flow.

The next several months are tricky as my Dad is having heart surgery so I am going back to the UK to take care of him for a couple of months - luckily I can do my telecommute job from anywhere.

Now I have a headache - think it's catching.

See, Steve? There's money to be had ! Take advantage of it whilst she's in her current condition, suggesting to her that she can bank the money into the child's college fund - a very positive way to contribute to the family finances.

Yes he certainly is. Many thought for sure he was a troll, but he's left the groups now and he really is continuing those actions. A couple people friended him and report back. Some of the guys even troll his webcam girl on the site she works on. He's got an entire assumed identity in an assumed name on FB to carry this on, as his wife caught him at it at one point. Its like watching a car crash on the freeway while you drive by, you can't help but watch. One of the guy's worries is he can't service his debt he's taken to do this, because he's now tapped out all his assets, retirement, home, the works.
