Caryh - so one of the reasons we are living here is it's a family property so we don't have to worry about rent. But you're right that the tension on both sides comes from being under a lot of strain on both sides. I do see his point too.

And yes - there was living beyond means which happened before I got here - and we are paying the costs of that now. I am a good budgeter though so I am getting things under control but it has been a tough few years - the savings were mostly taken up with emergencies like car repairs, hospital co-pays, etc. Which I guess is what savings are for.

Also I think we are a bit burnt out emotionally after the stress of losing my Mum to cancer, dealing with the terrible toddler years , plus the terrible teenage years etc.

It was nice to rant about it though last night - I haven't really moaned about it to anyone else because I don't want people from home to worry that I'm not happy over here.

if he's truly flipped it into a financial 'situation' and suffers much stress about this -

tis time for a spreadsheet !

figure out your time for various activities throughout a 2 week period - here's some rates and labels:

1. clean house - 17/hour

2. garden work - 15/hour

3. take care of child - 22/hour

4. cooking - 25/hour

5. wood restocking during winter time - 8/hour [sorry]

then throw that all together in a spreadsheet , showing your actual work wages also, then start playing with the debt load values as well.

in the end, math can be used to prove any point you want, but you must sit down and start it...

Good Luck to you, however it turns out. Even you prep the spreadsheet, you still don't have to show it to him - sometimes men scamper when cold/hard facts are presented in a reasonable fashion.

ETA - you gots 2 acres or more? Suggest step up the pace, get a horse buddy and cut grass buddy and a bagged leaf buddy - and start making compost, 1 to 3 tonnes/month, and sell them, bagged, at various markets in your area. I know winter is coming, but you can prep something soonish on this.

If they're both stressed out about money, this might just add fuel to the fire. Working together towards a mutually agreed to solution isn't going to come about by being the one to win a point.

Take 4 aspirin and Trophie will appear?

My company do provide "all you can eat" aspirins for free.....

Of course she will. Probably won't help the headache and double double vision vision though though.

2 sounds like free lunch there

Doing the math is useful, validation is useful,

but in the end, yer right, that's not the point.

Doing the math, however, can show the gap - and for some - knowing the gap , then making other plans to fill the gap, is useful.

One doesn't identify the gap only to stress out about it - there's other stuff to do, later.

IMO, it's personal finance 101.
