Hey guys,

So, today I got a text message saying my cases have been updated and my AED and travel document have been approved and will arrive within 30 days. My AOS is still on acceptance, nothing happened since June 16th, when my fingerprint fee was accepted. I have a couple of questions about this;

- Can I still start working even though my AOS hasn't changed yet?

- Is it normal for the AOS to be behind the AED and the travel document?

- Can I get my SSN with my EAD or do I have to wait till I get my AOS card?

Thanks in advance!

- Britt

- You can start working when you receive the EAD card in hand and while the AOS is still waiting for approval.

- Yes, it's very normal. EAD/AP has a processing time of 60-90 days whereas the AOS approval may take about 4 months to a year.

- Yes, you can apply for SSN with your EAD [also called the I-766]. http://www.socialsecurity.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf

Once you have your EAD in hand you cant start to work

Most people always get their EAD card first

When you entered the USA with your I-194 you could have applied for you SSN, which you can still do. take your marriage certificate and passport to your nearest SSN and get one. you can also get your Drivers Lic also at the DMV.

You say I CANT work???

I've called the SSN office a couple times and they tell me I need a document of arrival, which I have but is now expired. I should have done it within the two weeks or 3 weeks I got here. DMV also tells me I need a SSN to get a drivers license.

The document of arrival or I-94 is only one of the evidences of valid immigration status. Check page 2 of the SS-5. You can use the EAD (or I-766) in place of the I-94 in applying for the SSN.
