hello,

this is for a friend. Her green card(permanent resident card) expires in March 11, 2015(about 6 months from now). Past weekend was going to visit in Mexico, but was worried because her card went thru the drier cycle and was mutilated. She stopped at border and asked if it was still acceptable. Was told not to go across or she would face a $500 fine upon re-entry(I've never heard of this before) and she should replace it before leaving the country. So when she fills out her online form I-90 which reason should she select: 2.c. her card was mutilated or 2.f.her card expires within 6 months(it will, if she waits a few days to renew). I am leaning towards renew, but when card is renewed a sticker gets affixed to green card that extends expiration date for a few months, if her current card is mutilated I assume it will not be valid. If she replaces it, will she then have to renew again(paying another $450)? any insights, suggestions, or ideas are appreciated.

ok, i got an answer from uscis. in case this will help others, rep said the procedure is to select either(2c or 2f) he said he would select renewal (but didn't matter). When you go get pics and fingerprints the extension document/sticker will be affixed to current valid Mexican passport instead of to the mutilated resident/green card. so all one would need is a valid passport.
