Hello VJs

I'm so angry that I barely can write.

We are waiting for the appointment letter for over a month. Our interview is scheduled for September 15th in West Palm Beach.

We didn't receive it, but we got a notice, that our mail was returned to USCIS, because of.. something.

All right, mistakes happen, so we asked to resend it.

They did.

We asked, begged and asked again to fax us the letter, but they repeated that they CAN'T

So I was so happy seeing an envelope form USCIS today in the mailbox. Our appointment is supposed to be next Monday, right? So it was about time!.

The funny thing is, that the correspondence contains two pieces of email

- One, with the address of USCIS office in West Palm with my name and last name terribly misspelled (but right address), with the correct case number informing us, that they sent us the notice on September 15th and it was returned (back to the future or something?). And they would gladly inform us that this is our correct letter.

- Second piece of mail, with the actual appointment for somebody else (different name, address, case number, and a couple living in Mendon, Il) with the info that the appointment is on Oct. 14, in Saint Louis, MO.

What the hell is going on?

I'm trying to call USCIS, but they said they can;t do anything, that MY appointment is Sept. 15th but i have to bring my appointment letter. They don;t want to fax it, but resend it again. I have no idea what I would receive this time. A letter for somebody in California? Is that a lottery?

Sigh.

Did you hand-write your application and send it off?

Call USCIS and tell them you want to update the typo's in their system. Wait a day or two for the system to upate, then call USCIS and ask them to resend the letter. Also verify the update and verify the spelling of your name.

Also, only waiting a month for the interview letter is fairly short period of time.

But I have the interview this Monday! If they sent it now, we wouldn't receive it before the interview!

We got the date like 4 weeks ago!

Plus rest of the previous correspondence was addressed correctly.

A few things that may help:

1. call USCIS again and ask to speak with a Tier 2 IO and perhaps they can help.

2. go to the USCIS website and pring out the update page. This is print out, along with everything else you got from USCIS (including the letter that was meant for someone else), and go to your local USCIS office and ask to speak with the people at the help desk and explain to them your situation.

Let me know if you get our stuff (we're from California). :)

Oh and I suggest you to send that other one to the owner....they might be anxiously waiting for their appointment letter for October....food for thought...

i'm baffled and even at a lost for words as to how something like this could even happen. how does uscis make the mistake of sending an interview letter to the wrong person?

It may not have been USCIS. It may have been a mistake by USPS...

It may not have been USCIS. It may have been a mistake by USPS...

If you read the OP's post, you can conclude that it was not a mistake my USPS.

And by the way, the job of USPS is to ensure mail gets to the correct address. There is no way that USPS would make a mistake of sending something to Florida when it is supposed to have gone to California, the other side of the country.

I was thinking about it

But shouldn't I just send the letter back to USCIS?

I would call USCIS and let them know about the situation and ask them as to what to do next. This way, if something goes wrong, you can honestly say that you followed instructions per USCIS.

It wasn't USPS fault at all, because the correspondence was addressed to me (poorly but still). The interview letter is a second part of the mail and it's hidden under the first piece.

I called USCIS, but they were so confused and said "it's not possible".

Well it is possible obliviously.

I think I will just bring this letter to our interview on Monday, and report the case in person.

Otherwise everybody would be like "oh, it couldn't happen".

But shouldn't I just send the letter back to USCIS?

Can you make a copy and send the couple the copy of the letter with a note explaining that you received the letter by mistake - and that you have given the original to USCIS?

I don't know of the legality of my suggestion but I'm picturing what they will be going through in the next few weeks waiting for that interview notice.

That's a good suggestion angelboo31, Oct 14 is 4 weeks away so they get a copy ahead of time and USCIS has enough time to send the original to them.
