i do cross border banking with TD. I opened a Joint TD US bank account when i was visiting my wife down in New york..

i transfer funds easily through their cross border phone number , its very convenient.. no fees just the exchange rate which i get preferred as i also have a borderless account here in TD canada..

paying the fees went smoothly.. they need the routing number and account number i believe,,, i also have the two accounts linked so i can check the US account from my canadian account access..

So I have to say, two TD branch agents in the Vancouver area are detached from the reality of what their bank offers

i transfer funds easily through their cross border phone number ,

for those using TD Bank in the US and TD Canada Trust in Canada, do you have to call the hotline every time you want to transfer funds. Those using RBC said they can do this online with their accounts linked. To me that would be the much easier option. ((plan is to have a reoccurring amount transferred each pay day...))

In my mind I'm thinking not having access to a physical branch wouldn't be a problem (no TD Banks in MI), is there any reason I would need a branch? I try to do as much online as I can....

Thanks :)

And they charge a $15 fee on both accounts which they reimburse a few days later...makes no sense to me.

You can open the US account from Canada, we never had to go to an actual branch in the US. Just make sure you update your US account with your SSN once you get one.

I've had this battle for 4 years but it suddenly got much easier with TD. I'm with you on wanting to avoid RBC but didn't have a choice initially.

RBC can work Bc of the Georgia RBC accounts. You transfer your funds online between the two (Cdn/US) and then withdraw your money at a US ATM and deposit in your local US bank. Or pay your immigration fees with US RBC checks and save some fees using more than one bank.

Or TD got on the band wagon last year. I've been with TD since the 80's so closed my RBC accounts. Opened a US TD and can transfer online immediately. And same as above withdraw at an ATM and deposit in local US bank of your choice or pay with your US TD account. Advantage of this is if you need to get access to a large sun of money quickly. Otherwise you can do the following...

To save additional banking fees you can bypass the US account with either TD or RBC and just withdraw your max withdrawal limit at an ATM every day and deposit in your local US account of your choice.

Get TD to increase your max withdrawal limit at ATMs in the US daily AND weekly before you leave if you can. That avoids another monthly fee for an account you may not use ultimately once settled if there is not a local branch where u will be living.

Knowing that we were relocating to the States and having a joint Canadian TD for many years (my dh has a thorough distaste for RBC as well), we opened a US account a couple of months ago while on vacation even though we aren't living there yet. They wanted to see my US passport, his Canadian passport and our DLs (both Canadian). We both live in Canada. Did that no problem. Checks cost $12. In order to transfer money, you have to call and it takes about a day for the money to be in the US account. The exchange rate is no better.

When my dh gets his SSN, he will be able to use his Canadian credit rating for his credit card which is vital for us since I've been in Canada but having no personal income for many years. Me, the american, has no american credit since I left before I ever had a rating.

Moral of the story is it can be done and rather painlessly. Hope this helps!
