Questions regarding vaccinations and medical exam.

I've read a few threads on here and still not sure. We just recently received NOA2 for CR-1 visa on 9/3/14. My wife is in Bangkok and she does not have any vaccination records. Can she start the Vaccination process first incase she has to take series of shots? Or could she start the medical exam now, and vaccination is part of the medical exam process?

Any suggestions would greatly help, thanks.

There really isn't any reason to do the medical too early because it only takes a few hours anyway. The shots should consist of three. The follow ups can be done in the USA at your local health clinic, Keep in mind the medical is good for one year so if its done too early you may have to re- do it for the AOS later.

Thanks Ning. I was afraid that she would have to take all required shots on the list of vaccinations because she has no records. Is it part of the medical exam to see if some or all vaccines are needed?

They will check with her about her shot history but Thais don't usually have a shot card like we do in the USA. The laundry list of shots is almost never needed. The medical is actually done at a great hospital and isn't bad at all.

I did the follow ups at our local health clinic for 23 bucks rather than the 300 dollars a doctor wanted. Didn't matter at the AOS meeting later because they just weren't interested in medical due to timing.

OP is CR-1. There is no AOS to be concerned with. Get whatever shots you need to satisfy the embassy requirements and move on. Once you have the CR-1 visa, the vaccination requirements are finished.

Not everybody needs all of these shots. Many of them are for only certain age groups. My wife (age 41) needed only tetanus, MMR and varicella (which she is exempt from because she already had chicken pox).

Thanks! That's what she was afraid of.

There is a blood test called a TIter's test, which determines which of the required shots you actually need. You can't get it everywhere, just so you know.

In Manila, the doctor there determined my wife needed tdap, MMR and varicella, as I wrote above. But she already had chicken pox so she did not really need varicella. However, the doctor would not take her word for it on the chicken pox. Since they did not have the varicella in stock, he wrote her shots up as incomplete (missing varicella).

Here in New York, the civil surgeon sent her for the Titer's test, and sure enough it came back as chicken pox immune. So the doctor then marked her as complete.

For you, since you are CR-1, the shots must be completed there, so if there is no Titer's test available, she may be stuck with getting shots she does not need. There is no medical harm, so no big deal that way. Just letting you know. The doctor who does the exam is king, and whatever he says for shots goes.

Yadfon just did her medical last week. She had no shot records and required three shots. Son had to come back in 3 days for TB test read. We did it prior to getting packet three because I was in country and she wanted company. The hospital wanted interview date, case #, 2 pictures each, and their passports. We just made up an interview date. They wanted to see our appointment letter I told them that the embassy doesn't always send them out and if they would have pushed further I would have showed them the packet 4 instructions that states this. Getting it done early made us both feel better and she liked that I was with her. We also sent packet three as soon as NVC status changed to ready as others have done. We so want to be together before Christmas and it is going to be hard to do. if you wait for everything to come to you. So now we are just waiting for interview date with our fingers crossed.

She did that as soon as we had the NOA 2. They did ask for a color copy of my passport (instead of B/W) and a letter of invite that is not in the embassy information. It took two weeks to get it back.

We didn't have our NVC letter I had to call NVC to get BNK number because I was in Thailand and could not get my mail. I just kept telling them the embassy doesn't care as long as the medical is less than 6 months old. Her interview is 9 Dec and we can't wait.
