Would a Co-Sponsor Increase Chances for Approval?

We are filing for a CR1- visa, DCF in Bangkok. I would appreciate your perspective on how we should handle the I-864 form, Affidavit of Support.

  1. When the form asks for "current individual annual income", should I assume that is income for current year to date? (Part 6 question 5)
  2. The form asks for "Total Income" previous three years. Should I assume that figure should be taken from the "total income" line on my tax form 1040?
    • If yes, then only last year was my "total income" positive.
    • For two years prior to that, I reported negative "total income" despite making considerable earnings that are well above poverty line.
    • For this year, I have not yet filed a tax return. My income is barely above the U.S. poverty line.

How will my reported financial condition be perceived? Given this information I've provided about my finances, should I use a co-sponsor?

Thanks!

The term is actually "joint sponsor" for an I-864.

Current income is income you should make this YEAR, not year to date.

total income is from line 22 from your 1040.

If you are self employed, current income is your last year's income since there is no way to prove income beyond tax returns.

Each embassy and consulate has a different opinion on if you need a joint sponsor because your previous years were too low. You should check with others who are also going through your embassy in the embassy forum or regional forum. This thread can be moved to either of those if you would like.
