How did you enter before? Was it VWP? Are you still eligible for VWP?

From the many I have seen denied, it was for lack of ties to the UK. So take proof that you own a home and/or business, have a good job that allows you to be away half a year, have lots of money in the bank to fund this long trip. Have a written itinerary of each place you will be and why you need 6 months. The more documentation you provide, the better your chances. I mean on paper deed, bank statements, letter from employer saying you will still be employed after a 6 month absence...not just you telling them.

If you are denied the visa for lack of strong ties to the UK, then your visits are over because you can no longer use VWP. You lose that privilege if you have ever been denied a visa. In poker terms, you are going "all in" and could be out of the game if you lose. I hope you have a strong hand.

Not so.

You need to update ESTA, that may well result in a denied application, usually at some point later it will clear.
