You can start building his credit once he gets his SSN, so on the K-1 visa, even before you are married. The "restrictions" on the SSN are for work only, not anything else.

I highly suggest doing that ASAP. Waiting 3 years or so until the conditions are lifted, the 2 years, plus the time waiting for the first GC and the second, is way too long to wait :)

Really?! I'm off Monday because of Oral Surgery (Wisdom Teeth getting yanked), if I was in okay shape I was going to try and get our wedding license, and with this info, I think I'll start the ball rolling for his SSN too. He landed last weekend.

Be careful!!! Very careful!

You came on the 4th, right? You count 14 days, that the secure system database needs to be updated, and then you go and apply for the SSN BEFORE you get married. Their system has your maiden name in (the name you used to enter the country) and the name that is on your Visa. You're going to need your I-94 and your passport with your Visa on it.

After you get married, you will send the AOS papers using your new name and when you receive the confirmation that they got your papers, you will go back to the SS office and ask them to change your name.

Many people applied for the SSN after the wedding and it was a hassle with the name change and the entrance papers etc., as many employees are not familiar with the whole K1 process.

Message me if you need anything else!

It seems that with the electronic I-94, the time needed to wait to apply for an SSN is reduced. I saw that some have applied as early as the next day and didn't have any problems.

I agree that you need to apply with the name on your I-94 else there could be a bit of hassle.

PLEASE, listen to me!

Get your ssn under your maiden name as soon as you can, as me and my now wife, waited until after the wedding.,.,.,.,.,.,and it took months for us to get her SSN, because, the I-94, has your maiden name, it does not recognize your new married name.,.,.,.,took us 5 trips to SS office and the head of the department to get out mess straightened out!

DO SSN, ASAP! Then go to ss office with marriage licens, and "get the name changed" on your ssn card!

Speaking from experience!

Yesterday I applied for my snn. The whole process was rediculus easy! The office was FULL OF PPL... we were there 9:05 am (office opens at 9am) and were about 200 ppl. We couldn't find parking so we had to park on the mall cross the street. We got our number 457 and we prepared outselves to stay there for the rest of the day.

Fortunately the number were going by soooooo fast .... We had to wait only 10 mins.

When was our turn we went to the window we sat and we said i want my ssn , thats it. He asked my passport and my i94 printed paper and thats it. I didnt fill any paper ... Or anything, he asked me how to spell my parents name he gave me a paper to see if he wrote the names right and thats it.

The guy was soooooo kind and we were talking while he was on computer and joke ...

Whole process took like 20 mins,

To find parking around 15-30 mins lol...

So just be prepared before u go to miami office....

He told me i ll have my card in two weeks by mail. :)
