Upon arrival in US, a K1 visa holder is [still] a non-resident alien. This would be the status until the AOS is approved and the Green Card is received.

This was applicable to me, check with your local state laws but;

You are legally allowed to drive on your foreign license for 1 year, at which point you must either stop driving or obtain a US license.

I had to show them my permanent resident card (green card) so you might not be able to apply immediately, but know the 1 year grace period should apply, but check with your state's requirements.

Also, I did NOT have to forfeit my foreign (Australian) drivers licence, you are just applying for a US driver's licence, you don't even need to tell them you have a foreign licence. I did tell them but the lady's response was "I don't care about that license"

As my green card took 8 months, plus the 2 months or so from arriving > marriage > filing it did cut it close. I in fact stopped driving on a Friday on my one year anniversary (call me paranoid) and got my US license the following Tuesday.
