BP was grossly negligent in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and oil spill, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans means BP faces as much as $18 billion in civil penalties under the U.S. Clean Water Act for pollution in the Gulf of Mexico, far more than if the judge had found the company simply negligent.

BP said it disagreed with the decision and will appeal. "The law is clear that proving gross negligence is a very high bar that was not met in this case. BP believes that an impartial view of the record does not support the erroneous conclusion reached by the district court," the company said.

Should've charged and fined Halliburton as well - their nitrogen cement job failed to do the job and they knew about it.

and bp is appealing it. f bp

I think they are appealing the level of the damages vs those paid by Transocean and Halliburton and that some of the damage payments paid out may not have been justifiable.

I don't think are trying to make out that they aren't responsible at all.

Regardless of culpability, Interior Secretary Salazar's vow to keep the gubmint's "boot on the neck of BP" was wildly ill-chosen, but not dissimilar to other administration comments regarding industry (e.g. "bankrupt the coal industry"). Have a beef with industries? Prosecute, don't demonize. Apparently this administration plans on fueling the country on unicorn farts.
