That's being a bit dismissive of what the Chinese, Irish, native Americans, Germans, Italians, and many many many other immigrants did to "build" America as you say. Slavery wasn't even allowed in the north. And the north was the place where the majority of things were "built". Slaves mostly contributed to the wealth of the southern farms.

bringing up the unpaid work of slaves is not dismissive of other people's work. and i think you're forgetting how much agriculture meant to our beginnings as a country.
