So my question is, did you guys file your I-485s under your maiden or married name? Do you think it made any difference in the process? If filed with your maiden name, what steps did you take to legally change your name afterwards?

I filed it under my married name.

This is really all up to you since you can chose either one. What name do you want to go by? Remember that the name you put on the AP/EAD/AOS form is the name that will appear on the green card. Changing green card later will cost a lot. Its $45O for a name change if I remember correctly.

Oh man, I wish I knew that earlier. We filed with my maiden name but I'm not sure we would've had a choice in the matter since I plan to change my full name as well as taking his last name. Guess we'll have to bite the bullet on that one. Thanks for your input!

I read on one of the threads that during the interview, the spouse was allowed to have her name on file changed to her married name instead. If and when you do get an interview, maybe they can help you out with it too.

Using the Marriage Certificate to change your name to your married name can be done at the removal of conditions (ROC) phase--just complete the form in your married name and list your maiden name under the "other names used" section. To do a complete name change you will need a court order or wait until you file for naturalization to do a legal name change. If this is something you are really considering, you might want to do more research on the procedures and their costs.

Good luck,

Dave

I read that as well. I'll inquire when we have our interview.

I really wouldn't want to wait until getting naturalized so it sounds like I'll have to get a court order. Just hope it'll be possible to do while our papers get processed.
