It doesn't make sense, so I'm not trying to make sense out of it.

IMO, it would be discriminatory to check specifically for forged green cards or SSN's as part of the I-9 process, unless everyone including citizens were subject to the same criteria. It would take weeks to do this kind of check and the employer is not going to wait around. LPR's , by virtue of the process, have met the criteria for equal employment protection.

I thought E-verify takes seconds online.

So then what is the point of the 2 year green card? Or for that matter having an expiration date on any green card?

and I might add that if your two year GC expires, as ours recently did, you will have a letter extending it for 1 year while the ROC is being processed. An expired GC with no NOA1 or other document explaining ongoing action is a red flag

I thought E-verify takes seconds online.

It does. It immediate verifies SSN match name etc

And had the company in question utilized and relied on e-verify, they would not have been fined. They chose to go rogue instead and now received the bill.

Yeah but it uses the information on the I9. Back to square one. If the employee doesn't use the green card as ID, the employer can't ask for it.
