A lot of businesses don't use e-verify which I don't understand as it is free and only takes a few minutes to sign up an account. It is discrimination to require any documents above and beyond what is stated on the I-9 for employment verification. That is what this company was doing, requiring more documentation from non-US citizens than was required.

That seems pretty clear cut. The law sets the standard - making up your own IS discrimination.

We were discussing employment eligibility. You need to try and focus a little more.

While everyone is busy high fiving each other about how awesome their posts are, I guess they missed the part about them getting fined for not accepting an expired green card as proof of work eligibility.

I bolded, underlined, and italicized it this time. Somehow I doubt that will do the trick.

There could be several reasons. They have to accept the expired green card if renewal is in process (and proof is presented)

They also can't specifically ask for the green card, so even with an expired green card, you could use an unrestricted social security card and drivers license. The employer should then not be asking for the green card or any specific documents if work eligibility has already been established.

Also if someones green card expires after hire, the employer is not supposed to ask to provide a current green card for re-verification.

How completely screwed up is that? Illegal to hire an illegal, but illegal to check his status. <_<

One does not need a green card to be eligible to work in this country. The status of the applicant is largely irrelevant. What matters is whether they are eligible to work. And there are documents other than a green card that can establish that eligibility. It's really simple to understand. But apparently not simple enough.

People with green cards are not illegal.

You don't seem very familiar with the immigration process. You have previously asserted that you're not just here to troll, so you may want to brush up on that immigration knowledge a little.

I wasn't addressing the legal formalities, but the underlying question of "right & wrong"; apparently a foreign concept to you,

No. Green card holders are legal permanent residents. There are no legal formalities to address, nor any underlying question of right or wrong.

You are trying to create an issue where there is none.

Or to put it in colloquilal terms, you are being a drama queen.

Isn't it funny you should have to explain that simple basic concept in an immigration forum?:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Are expired green card holders legal residents? Are people that had their green cards revoked legal residents? Are people holding fake or fraudulent green cards legal residents?
