Do you need a valid passport for ROC?

Hi everyone, I'm back from the dead with a question.

I'm doing ROC on my two-year green card in October, and my Canadian passport expired last spring. Do I need a valid passport to file ROC? I looked at the ROC guide and it seems I don't, but I just want to be sure. I'm going to renew my passport before next spring, but if I could put it off till after ROC that would be nice since the renewal fee for the passport is quite hefty.

Don't forget it's usually easier when your passport has been expired less than a year, if you're eligible to use the simplified renewal. Good luck with ROC!

Stepdaughter was in this situation, even though my wife had full physical custody of her, her consulate refused to issue a renewed passport without permission from her biological father that refused to give it.

But even at this, there is no law that requires an immigrant to maintain a foreign passport. But you sure need one if you want to travel out of the country.

Hubby's Canadian passport expired in February and we filed in June. No issues at all. He just jumped through all the hoops to renew it recently (couldn't do the easy way because he accidentally washed it in his pants one day..), and we're all good now. You should be fine.
