Hey all,

So we have our interview coming up, I was just wondering if we need copies of documents we've already submitted for the interview. Some are listed on the mail notice we received, but said not needed if we've already submitted.

Things have gone so fast for us, I'm thinking (hoping) there won't be too much trouble. We have EAD/AP approved with no RFE and in around 60 days I think. Anyways, just wondering if people have had nasty experiences with this or not.

Ultimately I think always better safe than sorry. But just looking to hear of some experiences.

06/21/2010 - We first met.

06/06/2012 - My wife first comes to US on F-1 to study

You've essentially answered your own query. Better to bring something and not need it than the converse.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I regret not photocopying our entire packet we sent in verbatim.

I did too, but as it turned out, they had everything there, so they didn't ask for things already submitted. In fact, the IO gave us back our certified marriage license copies that we had ordered specifically for the AOS package. Was nice :)

I think it varies wildly by office/IO, so be as well-prepared as possible.

Bring copies of your AOS package. They may or not ask for something even when it is already in the package you sent and in the hands of the IO.

We were not even asked for originals of marriage certificate, birth certificates, divorce decrees or any other document we already submitted in copies. The only documents we were asked to present was our ID's, passports, my SSC card -which I did not bring with me but it was not an issue for IO- and at the end she asked if we wanted to present more evidence we did not submit originally. We showed her the purchase of a new vehicle and payments activity, 2 recent joint checking account statements so she could see our activity up to date.

Good luck!

I read a story where the person went to the interview, but there was some snafu and the IO did not have their file at all. Luckily, the person was super prepared and had a copy of his entire packet, so the IO decided they could do the interview anyway with what he had. He was approved. Had he not had the packet, he would have had to come back another day and waste more time.

AOS for my husband

5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

i highly recommend it. my IO interviewer didn't lose any of our forms, but he seemed a little annoyed at the start of the interview because he didn't have the paperwork that my school sent saying that i had graduated and was working on my OPT. i'm pretty sure my school filed the paperwork for me, because i got my OPT EAD card just fine. so ya in your words, better safe than sorry, you never know what your IO will lose ><
