A nice small little question. I received an email saying my card is in production (yay) can I apply for a SSN with that email as proof of receiving work authorisation or do I have to wait to receive the card? I know its only like 10 days I was just wondering if it is possible to speed it up further :)

Thanks

Unfortunately, no. You need to have the actual EAD card in hand when you go there.

Alright cool. Its no problem. I was just wondering :) thank you for the speedy reply BTW :)

You're welcome! Bring your passport and a filled-out SS-5 with your EAD.

Some folks also mentioned that they were asked for their birth certificate. So might as well bring that too. Good luck!

That's exactly what I did too. Not sure though if it's even necessary, but I didn't encounter any issue. :)

As stated, they seem to ask to see your birth certificate most of the time when you first apply for a new number and card (they asked for mine).

I have the exact situation as yours, except that i have not file out my ss5. I just want to know you what you sent along with ss5.

As I know they need at least 2 kinds of documents:

1. passport

2. Immigration status document, which is EAD here, and you have not had it in your hand yet.

So I'm just wondering, what did you send with you ss5 files, just passport ?

I'm kinda confused by that!

Thanks in advance for you explanation !

I have not filed my SS5 as of yet I am waiting for my EAD in the mail as it is going through card production. However. The documents I'm bringing along to the social security office will be my EAD ( should arrive next week hopefully) birth certificate, passport, name change documents ( my surname changed when I was 10 years old as my parents got married) my unexpired British passport, my marriage certificate and of course my completed SS5 form :) I hope that helps sorry if my previous post led to any confusion :)

Thanks so much!

One more question. Do you have a I-94 form or whatever form just like the I-94? I saw you didn't mentioned it in the reply, so you are not planning to submit it. Am I right?

I saw some case in the forum mentioned it could be a hassle if your I-94 expired. Also some cases don't even need I-94 after you got EAD. I checked the SSN website, and the listed request document for evidence of immigration status are Form I-551, I-94, or I-766. Technically, you only need one, anyone from those 3 forms would do, cuz they said "or".

My I-94 are just expired, so I'm worried it might be a hassle.

I have my I-94 which is also expired :P I came here on the VWP which expired last October, you have the stamp in your passport saying you entered the country, you can also go here https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html;jsessionid=v7tQJQKSk08y2NX0YS1cYxGgDQMMJ2B2F5v7XJpP6G9jf4qNYymj!-708832494 and get your entry information to the USA.

They should not give you much trouble with it as you have a valid EAD card, You cannot get your I-551 until you get approved for your Green Card.

Just take everythign you have along birth cert, passport etc etc and you should be alright :D
