Applying for SSN after arriving with a K1 visa....which one is true?

I have read that you can apply for your SSN as soon as you arrive in the U.S if you have a K1 visa. I have also read that you need to wait two weeks. Which one is true?

You should wait ~10 - 14 days to ensure that your information has been entered into the SAVE database; if it hasn't then you cannot obtain a social security card until it has.

Since the I-94s have become automatic/electronic, people have found that waiting 2 weeks is no longer necessary. Some have successfully applied for the SSN within days of arrival.

I waited 2 weeks but later found out I didn't have to. Print your I-94 from here

and bring your passport. That's all you need, other than the form you'll be given to fill out.

There isn't a wait anymore. You should be able to go next day to get your SSN after you arrive. My fiancée was able to apply for her SSN 4 business days after her POE.

Your information need to be in the system so that SSA can bring it up on their computer, sometimes that can take 10 days or so. Recently I read of someone going to SSA within days of arriving and getting their SSN. The new software that caused the earlier glitch may have updated this process so a long wait isn't needed.

You can go down to SSA anytime you please, if you are in the system all is good, if not you will have to come back at a later date.

Thanks everybody for your input. We will be sure to print the I-94 before we go to the SS office. Luckily it is located right downtown.
